The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
