Combatants smirk as they travel on the back of a pick-up truck, racing past a row of nine corpses and heading facing the descending Sudanese sunset.

"Look at such effort. Observe this genocide," a fighter cheers.

He smiles as he directs the recording device on his own face and his companion militiamen, their paramilitary badges clearly shown: "The victims shall all be killed this way."

The men are rejoicing over a massacre that relief organizations suspect claimed the lives of over two thousand people in the African metropolis of al-Fashir during October.

A Community Severed from the World

After maintaining the city under encirclement for approximately two years, from the summer the paramilitary force proceeded to strengthen its control and blockade the remaining civilian population.

Space-based imagery show that troops began to build a massive earth barrier - a elevated sand barrier - around the perimeter of al-Fashir, blocking roads and halting relief supplies.

During the encirclement escalated, seventy-eight civilians were murdered in an RSF strike on a place of worship on mid-September, while the international organization reported dozens additional were murdered in aerial and artillery strikes on a displacement camp in the autumn.
