Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has labeled the circumstances as a "complete and utter mess," speaking this morning.

Appearing on a radio program, he referenced comments made by David Lammy following a previous inmate discharge, saying that Lammy would establish stricter checks.

"It took almost a week for the corrections department supposedly to realize this has happened" and notify the police, the shadow official explains, "leaving them a week late in the manhunt to locate him."

The opposition figure criticises Lammy's handling during yesterday's PMQs and accuses him of a "complete failure in responsibility."

Addressing mistaken inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "every single mistaken discharge [...] is unforgivable."

He admits there were similar incidents under the former Conservative government, but claims the figure "has increased dramatically" under Labour.

Calling for more prisons to be built, he continues: "The public want to see now are proper safeguards put in place."

"This represents a particular bureaucratic error by the Ministry of Justice supervised by David Lammy," Jenrick says.
