Cameroon Political Opposition Figure to Face Legal Action Concerning Election Unrest, Government Declares

Election Demonstration in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has stated that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he instigated "violent election protests".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during skirmishes between police and military and demonstrators since the presidential election on October 12, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth consecutive term.

Issa Tchiroma insists that he won the election, a assertion dismissed by Biya's ruling party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by security personnel on protesters have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, African Union and EU calling for caution.

Official's Accusations

On Tuesday, the interior minister accused Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he labeled "illegal" demonstrations resulting in the deaths, and also criticised him for claiming win in the election.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators responsible for an subversive plot" will also undergo judicial processes.

Vote Outcome

Paul Biya, who came to power in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, obtained the 12 October presidential election with 53.7% of the vote, compared to 35.2% for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the constitutional court.

Opposition Response

Issa Tchiroma is has not yet commented to the official announcement to try him, but he had earlier stated that he refused to acknowledge a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being detained.

On election result day, he reported that gunmen shot on demonstrators present near his house in Garoua, killing at least two people.

Investigation Announced

Recently, the government official disclosed that an investigation would be launched into unrest before and after the publication of the election results.

"During these attacks, some of the criminals were killed," he commented, without giving a exact count of protesters who have been lost their lives in the clashes.

Nji added that several members of the police and military also suffered serious injuries.

Present Conditions

Although Nji maintained the condition across the country was now under control, protesters continue to protest in certain regions of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on Tuesday, and ignited tires on the streets.

Observers warn that the election-related unrest could lead the nation into a political crisis.
